Uniform Policy
On most days, students are required to wear the school uniform at all times at school, and while participating in school activities. The full uniform policy can be found on the next page.

Grub Days

Grub Days take place approximately once per month. Students are permitted to wear non-uniform items on a Grub Day for a nominal fundraising cost. Typically Student Council or other leadership groups will use funds raised for a particular cause or purpose (i.e. for the food bank, prom etc.).

The dress code for Grub Days is designed to ensure all members of the UFA community feel comfortable in the school (or work) environment. As such students participating in Grub Day can wear non-uniform clothes provided the clothing is modesty appropriate to a teaching and learning environment and that:

  • Clothing is alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drug insignia-free;
  • Clothing conforms to TDSB Safe Schools Policies.
Spirit Days

Spirit Days include, but are not limited to: Halloween; Ugly Holiday Sweater Day; Pajamas Day; Rainbow Day; and Sport Jersey Day. Students are encouraged to participate in Spirit Days and are need to meet the specific criteria of the day (i.e. wearing a Halloween costume).

Students not participating in the Spirit Day activities are expected to be in uniform. As in the case of Grub Days, students participating in Spirit Days can wear Spirit Day non-uniform clothes provided that the clothing is modesty appropriate to a teaching and learning environment and that:

  • Clothing is alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drug insignia-free;
  • Clothing conforms to TDSB Safe Schools Policies.
Uniform Policy

The student uniform policy was originally conceived by parents, students, staff and Dr. Franklin to meet two major objectives: an aid in working towards developing a sense of equity; and in helping to maintain a strong sense of community. At the time of selection the combination of colours did not represent any country represented by the United Nations – an important consideration to ensure the school uniform did not take on any unintended meaning or representation.

The UFA Uniform continues to evolve in terms of styles and articles and remains a focus of equity and community at the school. The Student Uniform Association (SUA) was developed by UFA Students to provide a Child-Free Labour option to students and parents when purchasing uniform pieces. The Student Uniform Association proceeds directly support the EnrichedWednesday Session program via Wednesday Grants. Dr. Ursula Franklin’s feelings on the uniform continue to resonate with the UFA community and as originally conceived. Below are her thoughts, as shared by the Student Uniform Association.

“Ursula is passionate about keeping the uniform, as she feels that it teaches students that there are prerequisites to belonging to a reasonable and just community – and one of those is to do what you say you will do (as each student does when he or she signs the uniform agreement before entering UFA). Students need to realize that there will be many things in their futures that they will not want to do, but have to do: some things are not discretionary, like uniforms or deadlines. Ursula also feels that young people need to realize that they cannot focus all of their lives on whether or not they are profoundly understood – small challenges in a good supportive atmosphere are the best way to learn this. Ursula also wants to remind students that they should be seen as a person, not a package.” ~ 2010
